RWA Kiss of Death Killer Instincts Workshop for May:

WORKSHOP #1

May 2014: Q is for Query, A is for AAACK! with Laurie Schnebly Campbell

sign up at: http://www.rwa.org/e/in/eid=273

No writer can get far without the most fundamental tool of selling their work:  an effective query letter. And yet it’s frequently a source of dread for writers who create compelling fiction, yet panic at the idea of creating a compelling sales pitch. Laurie Schnebly Campbell brings 25 years of advertising experience to the task of identifying what makes people want to buy a product — any product — and how to convince them YOURS is the one they want.

Bio: Known for workshops that leave participants feeling like they’ve really rolled up their sleeves and LEARNED something, Laurie Schnebly Campbell draws on her background as a marketing pro, counselor, and novelist who’s lived through everything from Second Book Syndrome to beating out Nora Roberts for “Best Special Edition of the Year.” Visit her website: www.booklaurie.com.

The RWA® Mystery/Suspense Chapter, The Kiss of Death (KoD), is very proud to announce our online College of Felony and Intrigue — affectionately known as COFFIN.

The four-week workshops are conducted via EMAIL only, no real-time or live chats. Participants will be subbed to the list for the month of the workshop, then unsubbed when it is over. Workshops are open to everyone with email capability who wish to participate, not just KOD members. (Although for the low $15 workshop fee for KOD members, it might be worth joining the Chapter!)

WORKSHOP #2

RWA Kiss of Death online Murder One Workshop for May:

SELF DEFENSE FOR WRITERS with Mark Pfeiffer and Wendy ‘Piper’ Rome [wlrome@shentel.net]

Sign up at: http://www.rwa.org/e/in/eid=273

Get dynamic tools for writing realistic self defense scenes that boost your conflict, characterization, scene settings, and plotting.  Use situational awareness, states of awareness, the OODA loop, fight or flight physiology, and self defense methods to write emotionally and physically charged scenes that will keep your readers turning those pages. Piper Rome and Mark Pfeiffer will review these principles and provide information about basic self defense techniques, weapons, concealed carry and more.  The class will focus on self defense methods, weapons, situational awareness, states of awareness, threat recognition, the OODA loop, action/reaction, fight or flight, defense methods, and other concepts that will help you empower your characters with the ability to recognize and react to threats as they develop. Write realistic believable self defense scenes that invest your readers in your characters’ emotions, step by step.

Bios: Mark Pfeiffer, former Chief Petty Officer (US Navy), currently works as a security specialist.  He has been a member of a shipboard counter-terrorism team and was a competition rifle shooter. He is also a former law enforcement officer and former firefighter/EMT. As a deputy sheriff, he covered over 1,600 square miles of territory that included parts of the Navajo Indian Reservation, I-40, small cities, and large tracts of unincorporated areas where his nearest back-up was often an hour or more away.  He maintains a concealed carry permit, his preferred carry piece being a mildly customized 1911A1 .45 ACP. He has dabbled in writing fan fiction for several series he enjoys, and has been one of the experts for the “Weapons_Info” Yahoo group for the past several years.

Wendy “Piper” Rome maintains proficiency with pistols, rifles, and shotguns on her private shooting range.  A suspense writer, she carries concealed and has successfully defended herself against two would-be muggers. Wendy “Piper” Rome has held a concealed carry permit for over fifteen years and rarely goes anywhere without her .45 and a knife or two. She has trained tactically with both carbine and pistol, focusing on self defense, and maintains proficiency with her weapons on her own shooting range in the Shenandoah Valley. Now retired from her career as an aviation trial attorney, she writes romantic suspense. She has been a member of RWA, KOD, Chesapeake Romance Writers, and Virginia Romance Writers and can be found answering weapons questions on several Yahoo groups including Weapons_Info and crimescenewriter.
